A quick guide to how we make our stained glass pieces
Copper foil method, or also referred to as the ‘Tiffany Method’
Most of the work you see on our page (currently) involves the copperfoil technique, as opposed to the lead channel came method you see in most traditional churches. This is an explantion on how we make the pieces we make.
First Christian creates the ‘cartoon’
based on our own ideas, a commision request or a combination of both, Christian will create a design known as a cartoon, to perfectly work within the cutting shapes of stained glass. Its not as simple as just drawing out a picture, each piece of glass needs to connect in a way that will work in glass and won’t be fiddly and difficult to cut and create.
Picking out Glass
The next stage is picking out glass. A common misconception from the name ‘Stained glass’ is that we stain the glass to get the colours. We sadly don’t. However we do spend a lot of time picking out different types of glass, to carefully consider what we are going for with the look and feel of the piece. There are suprisingly for glass, two types we intially think about after/while choosing the colours which is whether we want it to be opaque or transparent, or mixed. We also look at the textures, most glass is flat, but some have inconsistant random gradient.
